在Harper's Monthly (September 1932)发布的关于爱迪生的文可以说是第一次说爱迪生说了Genius is one percent inspiration, ninety-nine percent perspiration.这句话。
一般认为这句话提炼自1929的一次发布会，在发布会中爱迪生说了None of my inventions came by accident. I see a worthwhile need to be met and I make trial after trial until it comes. What it boils down to is one per cent inspiration and ninety-nine per cent perspiration.说的是勤奋的作用。
另外一次他说的版本是："Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine per cent perspiration. Accordingly, a 'genius' is often merely a talented person who has done all of his or her homework."依旧是在说勤奋的作用。
爱迪生本人没有说过“但没有这1%的灵感那99%的汗水也是徒劳”这样的下半句。
而Without the one percent of inspiration, all the perspiration in the world is only a bucket of sweat.是作家Cindi Myers自己对于爱迪生的敬仰的发挥，不是爱迪生所说，随后在翻译中估计出了些小错误。
